Asian handicap explained for beginners
Updated November 1, 2026
An Asian handicap gives one team a goal start before the match kicks off. It removes the draw from the bet, so there are only two outcomes, and it makes uneven matches closer to a fair contest.
Half-goal lines
These are the simplest, because the bet can never be a tie.
| Your bet | What has to happen |
|---|---|
| Team -0.5 | Team wins by any score |
| Team -1.5 | Team wins by two goals or more |
| Team +0.5 | Team wins or draws |
| Team +1.5 | Team wins, draws or loses by one goal |
A worked example
You back Arsenal -1.5 and the match ends 2-1. Take 1.5 goals from Arsenal and the score becomes 0.5-1, so the bet loses. At 3-1, the adjusted score is 1.5-1, so it wins.
Whole and quarter lines
Bookmakers also offer lines such as -1 and -0.75. A whole line refunds your stake if the margin lands exactly on it. A quarter line splits your stake across two neighbouring lines, so you can win or lose half. We only publish half-goal lines because they are the easiest to follow and grade.
Our Asian handicap predictions show the strongest line for every match.
